Chrome Extension
The operatory computer becomes a scribe.
Record from the computer already in the room, with any microphone you choose. Speech-to-text runs in the browser, and the finished note lands on your phone, in the Notes tab, or straight in the chart.
Free with every CareNotes account. Works in Chrome, Edge, and Brave.
How it works
Four steps, and the computer in the room does the rest.
The extension lives in the browser side panel, next to whatever you already have open. It is the same CareNotes account as the app, so every visit it captures shows up where your other notes do.
Add it and sign in
Install from the Chrome Web Store, click the CareNotes icon, and sign in with Google or the same email you use in the app. Allow the microphone once.
Pick the patient
Tap a name in Today’s Patients when your practice software is linked, choose from recent records, or just type a name. Set the procedure type if you want, or leave it to CareNotes.
Record from the room
Click Real-time Clinical Notes. Choose the microphone from the menu under the button and watch the level bar move. Close the panel and keep working; recording continues until you stop it.
The note is waiting
Speech-to-text runs in the browser as you go. The transcript syncs to your account, the CareNotes app writes the note, and it is ready to review and sign on the phone or copy from the Notes tab.
Running back-to-back? Start the next patient while the last one is still processing. The Recording Queue shows each session’s status and what finished today.
In the side panel
Two tabs. Everything a visit needs.
Visits is where you record. Notes is where today’s finished notes wait to be copied. Settings holds the microphone, tooth numbering, and the optional speaker labels.
-
Today’s Patients Premium
The day’s schedule from Open Dental, Dentrix Ascend, or the CareNotes Agent, with a provider filter and a date picker. Tap a visit and the patient is selected.
-
Patient and procedure
Choose from recent records or type a new name. Procedure type is optional; the list covers exams, restorative, crowns, implants, RCT, extractions, Invisalign, and more.
-
Real-time Clinical Notes
One button to record, a timer while it runs, and a microphone menu with a live level bar beneath it. A full-screen Calming Mode hides everything but the orb if the screen faces the patient.
-
Voice Perio Chart
Call out pocket depths, bleeding, recession, mobility, and furcation hands-free. Universal or FDI numbering. How voice perio works.
-
Notes tab
Today’s finished notes, ready to copy into any practice software. They clear at midnight; History in the app keeps them.
-
Settings
Preferred microphone, practice type, tooth numbering, and an optional Identify speakers after transcription switch that labels who said what.
A computer and a microphone
Set up a treatment room once. Nobody carries anything.
Some offices would rather not record from a phone in a scrub pocket or an Apple Watch. The extension turns the operatory computer into the recorder, with a microphone that stays in the room and an assistant who presses the button.
The computer
Already in the room
Any Windows or Mac machine running Chrome, Edge, or Brave. Install the extension and sign in with the provider’s CareNotes account on that computer.
- No new hardware at the chair
- Side panel sits next to the chart
- Recording keeps going with the panel closed
The microphone
Any mic Chrome can see
A USB desk or conference microphone on the counter picks up the room. A clip-on lavalier follows the provider. The built-in laptop mic works for a quiet operatory.
- Pick it from the menu under the record button
- The level bar confirms it is hearing you
- Remembered for next time
The person at the keyboard
Assistant or hygienist
Whoever is closest selects the patient and clicks record when the provider walks in, and stops when they walk out. The provider never touches a device.
- Notes collect on the provider’s phone
- Also in the Notes tab on that computer
- One extension per operatory computer

Into the chart
Three ways out of the browser. All from the same recording.
Pick whichever fits the office. The transcript is the same; only the last step changes.
Phone writes it
Review and sign in the app.
The default. The transcript syncs to CareNotes on the phone, which writes the structured note. Speak edits, add perio, sign, and send it from Ready to Upload.
Copy and paste
Any practice software.
Open the Notes tab in the panel, or carenotes.ai/notes, copy the finished note, and paste it into the chart you already have open.
Straight from Chrome Premium
No phone in the loop.
Turn on Generate my notes and send to PMS from Chrome, pick Progress Note or SOAP, and the finished note goes into the linked chart when the recording stops.
Who it is for
Offices that live on the operatory computer.
Built for the room, not the pocket
Hygiene rooms with a shared workstation, multi-provider offices where an assistant runs the chart, and anyone who would rather not hand their phone a role during the visit. The Watch and the phone are still there when you want them; the extension is the third option.
- Works alongside the iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple Watch apps
- Same account, same History, same templates
- Start a patient on one device, add audio from another
Privacy on the computer
Speech-to-text runs inside the browser on that machine, so patient audio stays there and is not uploaded. Only the transcript text syncs to your account to build the note. PHI is not used to train models, and a BAA is executed with the practice.
Questions
The short answers.
Do I need Premium to use the Chrome extension?
No. Recording from the computer, in-browser speech-to-text, and sync to your CareNotes account are included with every account. Premium adds Today’s Patients from your practice software, sending notes straight into the chart from Chrome, and structured perio upload. See pricing.
Can I use a dedicated room microphone?
Yes. Any microphone the computer can see shows up in the panel’s microphone menu: the built-in mic, a USB desk or conference microphone, or a clip-on lavalier. Pick it once and the level bar confirms it is hearing you.
Can an assistant run it on the operatory computer?
Yes. Sign in with the provider’s CareNotes account on that computer. The assistant selects the patient and presses record, and the finished notes collect on that provider’s phone and in the Notes tab.
Is patient audio uploaded?
No. Speech-to-text runs inside the browser on the computer. Audio stays on that computer; only the transcript text syncs to your account so the note can be written.
Do I still need the phone?
By default the transcript syncs to the CareNotes app, which writes the note so you can review, speak edits, and sign it. With Premium and a linked practice management system you can turn on Generate my notes and send to PMS from Chrome, and the note goes into the chart without opening the phone.
Which browsers are supported?
Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Brave, installed from the Chrome Web Store.
